Holiday Season Starts Local: A Closer Look at Bellflower Florist & Gifts in Norwalk

There are businesses in every town that become part of the rhythm of the seasons because people simply return to them year after year when life calls for something warm, beautiful, or meaningful. In the Norwalk area, Bellflower Florist & Gifts has become one of those places.

Step through their doors this time of year and you can feel the shift immediately — the slight scent of pine, the soft glow from seasonal displays, the familiar murmur of people picking up gifts with intention rather than urgency. Lisa Even Comes To Warren County Women's Mentoring Event

The morning mist was just lifting from Wilson's Orchard & Farm when I arrived at 8:30 AM, but the energy was already electric. Nearly 82 women from across the Norwalk area had gathered for something rare in our busy lives – a morning dedicated entirely to joy.

As someone who helps families navigate major life transitions through real estate, I've learned that successful life changes aren't just about logistics – they're about maintaining the emotional fuel that sustains us through challenges. That's exactly what keynote speaker Lisa Even addressed in her powerful presentation: "Joy is My Job: Reclaiming What Fuels You."

The Setting: Wilson's Orchard as the Perfect Backdrop

There couldn't have been a more fitting venue than Wilson's Orchard & Farm for a conversation about rediscovering joy. As attendees gathered in the farm's beautiful event space, surrounded by seasonal abundance, the metaphor was unmistakable – joy, like a well-tended orchard, requires intentional cultivation to bear fruit.

"When was the last time you truly enjoyed yourself?" Lisa Even asked as she opened her keynote, and you could feel the room collectively pause. "Not to check a box. Not to be productive. But simply for the joy of it. Joy is very unique to you and will look different to us all."

The question hung in the air like morning dew, settling into the consciousness of women who had arrived with their mental to-do lists still running, their phones buzzing with responsibilities, their minds already jumping to the next thing after this event ended.

Lisa Even's Message: Joy as Fuel, "Borrow Some of Mine"

Lisa Even didn't waste time with pleasantries. Her message was direct: "Today let's pretend we are sitting in a coffee shop, just chatting as friends. Waiting to be caffeinated and fueled. Some would say I am over-fueled or over caffeinated, with a smile on her face. So, if you find yourself low on fuel today, you can borrow some of mine!"

What struck me most about Lisa's approach was her practical framework for understanding joy. According to research on Circle of Control and Stephen Covey sustainable happiness isn't about constant positivity – it's about building what Lisa called "reframing the mindset" through intentional practices.

The room was completely engaged when Lisa moved from theory to practice, sharing the simple tool that transformed her own relationship with joy. "I asked my husband to hang a whiteboard on our bedroom wall," she explained, "and I started with just one-hour moments." The examples were refreshingly accessible: a solo trip to a local coffee shop, an intentional movie night with the family, or creating a themed dinner night at home.

Lisa's framework centered on what she called the three pillars of sustainable joy: DESIRE (identifying what truly lights you up), PERMISSION (giving yourself the right to prioritize happiness), and BELIEF (trusting that joy is worth the investment of time and energy). These pillars, she explained, help remove the obstacles that keep us stuck – whether those barriers are financial constraints, work pressure, family responsibilities, or our own internal resistance to prioritizing happiness.

Then came the statistic that made the room collectively pause. "Did you know that only about 38% of Americans report being happy?" Lisa asked. "That leaves 62% of Americans who are unhappy."

I watched as heads nodded around the room – not with surprise, but with recognition. The statistic wasn't shocking; it was validating. It gave permission for the struggle that so many in the audience were quietly carrying. Looking around at the engaged faces, I couldn't help but wonder: if we had polled the room that morning, which category would these accomplished, driven women have placed themselves in? And more importantly, would that answer be different by the time they walked out with their Joy Toolkits in hand?

Breakout Sessions: Where the Real Work Happened

The 9:45 AM breakout session, "Where's the Joy? Permission and Planning," is where Lisa's concepts moved from inspiration to implementation.

Break out sessions were fun, engaging, and involved personal sharing of experiences and vulnerability. Looking around I noticed the audience engaged, laughing, nodding and note taking often.

The Joy Toolkit: Taking Action Beyond the Event

Perhaps the most thoughtful aspect of this event was Lisa's comprehensive "Joy is My Job Toolkit" that each participant received. This wasn't conference swag – it was a practical roadmap for sustained change.

I overheard conversations about being more spontaneous, read the book, get the massage, enjoy the coffee inside the coffee shop, have candles at dinner for no particular reason, break out the china, eat outside (picnic), try out the new comedy club or local restaurant, support the high-school football team with Hubby, check out the 9 Iowa best waterfalls trip, go hiking, and whatever you decide just deciding is what counts.

The networking wasn't about business cards or professional advancement – it was about authentic connection and mutual support.

The Ripple Effect: What This Means for Our Community

As I reflected on the morning while driving back through downtown Norwalk, I was struck by the potential ripple effects of what had just occurred.

Lisa's closing message about "when women lead with joy, the ripple effect is undeniable" felt particularly relevant for our growing community.

According to the American Psychological Association , communities with higher levels of individual wellbeing show increased:

Civic engagement and volunteerism
Support for local businesses
Collaborative problem-solving
Overall community resilience

At Family Pet Veterinary Center, we’ve always believed in providing exceptional care for your pets, and our new clinic is going to take that care to the next level. We are thrilled to announce the upcoming opening of our state-of-the-art facility right here in the heart of Norwalk. Designed with both pets and their owners in mind, this new space will provide a unique, stress-free experience for all animals and their families.

Our new structure will be built behind our current Norwalk location, with phase 1 completion anticipated for July 28, 2025. Once phase 1 is completed, we will move our Norwalk location into the new structure and immediately begin demolishing our current facility. Phase 2 will begin right away, with an addition to the new structure and the finishing touches, all expected to be completed in November 2025.

Introduction

You won’t BELIEVE the place I just visited! Picture this: I’m walking into what I thought was “just another daycare center,” but oh my goodness, was I wrong! Crayons2Pencils is like that hidden gem you stumble upon and then can’t stop telling everyone about. It’s that magical mix of education, fun, and community that makes you wish you could go back to being a kid again!

The Welcoming Atmosphere

The moment I walked in, it felt like I’d entered some kind of perfectly organized kid paradise. The place was buzzing with little voices, but not in that chaotic way that makes you want to reach for earplugs. The kiddos were all enjoying pizza bagels (which looked delicious, by the way), and I was greeted by this super friendly staff member who waved me in with the warmest smile.

Best Bus In Town!

Kitchen Duties

After lunch, I was BLOWN AWAY by how these little ones just automatically knew what to do.They lined up to clear their plates, took them to the kitchen, and – get this – were washing their hands WITHOUT being told! I’m serious! It’s like they’ve created this mini-society where the kids actually take pride in keeping their space clean. Not a single argument or tantrum in sight – just giggles and excitement about whatever activity was coming next.

More Than Just A Daycare

I asked Jill (one of the owners) what she thought the biggest misconception people have about this place Jill states “just a daycare.” During my tour, Jill (more about her amazing story in a bit!) made it very clear that Crayons2Pencils offers SO much more.
They have a full curriculum including Spanish lessons, literacy classes, social-emotional
development programs, and even parenting classes! Plus, they’re open year-round, which is a lifesaver for working parents.

I think what would surprise most people is just how MASSIVE their facility is. The space they have for both the kids and community events is incredible. It truly functions as a second home for these children.

Volunteer Opportunities Galore

If you’re looking for ways to give back to the community, this place has options coming out of their ears! They host this super cute Santa workshop event every year, plus tons of park events throughout the seasons. This April 17th, they’re even organizing an Easter egg hunt that sounds like so much fun!

They welcome college students who need observation credit hours, volunteers to help build playground equipment (remember when we built that treehouse for your kids? Same energy!), and even have the sweetest group of grandmothers who come in to read stories to the children.

Oh, and the kids get special visits from the zoo, local dentists, Music for Tots, Apex Jr Soccer, and the fire department! Talk about making learning exciting!

Here’s something I didn’t expect – Crayons2Pencils doubles as a community center that you can rent online for private events! You get a private access code to the building and can reserve it for literally ANY occasion.

The Dynamic Duo: Jill and Cindy

I didn’t get to meet Cindy during my visit, but Jill took me on the tour, and OMG, trying to keep up with her energy like she may have been on her third cup of coffee! ��

She was practically glowing when she showed me a desktop photo of her six children. Apparently, they all have this competitive streak – and after meeting Jill, I can totally see where they get it from!

The story of how Jill & Cindy met is straight out of a movie. So picture this: Jill was working at Principal Financial but dreaming of opening an in-home daycare.

In 2008, Jill quit her corporate job and started a preschool in her basement. In 2010 she transitioned to Crayons2Pecils Preschool where they offered preschool sessions and after 1 year of preschool sessions they realized their house was too small and ended up building a house with a preschool classroom attached to their house with a separate entrance.

Oh, and did I mention that Jill was also killing it with Mary Kay on the side? She actually won the Mary Kay car! Who does that?! Clearly someone with serious hustle!

Now here’s where it gets crazy – when Jill needed to sell her house and started to build her new house, guess who bought it? CINDY! Cindy ended up running her own daycare in Jill’s old house and taking all of Jill’s overflow kids.

For over a year, they were referring clients back and forth until they finally had the brilliant idea to join forces. In 2016, they opened their first official Crayons2Pencils location with 6 classrooms and 28 teachers. Talk about a match made in daycare heaven!

Teaching Soulmates: The Perfect Professional Match

Like I mentioned earlier, I didn’t get to meet Cindy during my visit, but girl, I heard ALL about her! She’s ultimately been described as Jill’s business soulmate. Cindy has her freaking MASTERS in teaching (hello, qualifications!) and when Jill was launching this whole Crayons2Pencils adventure, she knew exactly who to call. These two are basically the dynamic duo of childcare—where Jill falls short, Cindy swoops in with superpowers, and vice versa. It’s like watching a perfectly choreographed dance where neither of them misses a beat. You know those work relationships you dream about? The ones where you actually ENJOY showing up every day? That’s what these two have created. #WorkRelationshipGoals, And honestly, watching Jill’s energy bouncing off the walls as she showed me around, I can only imagine the magic that happens when these two powerhouses put their heads together!

The Man Behind The Wheel: Matt Crayons2Pencils’ Secret Weapon

Oh my gosh, I have to tell you about Matt, Jill’s husband and the co-owner of Crayons2Pencils! Watching this man’s journey from corporate suit to childcare champion has been SUCH a transformation story. When Jill talks about him, her eyes literally sparkle—the pride is unmistakable!

Matt doesn’t just handle all the construction projects, repairs, and expansions for their growing empire (which, let’s be honest, is a full-time job itself). The highlight of his day is actually driving the school bus! And this isn’t your average school bus experience—Matt makes it an absolute event that the kids live for.

“Matt knows every single child by name,” one staff member told me with a grin. “He’s got this special connection with them that’s just magical to watch.”

Each ride has become a mini-tradition for these lucky kiddos. He’s got his “Joke of the Day” that has them giggling all the way from school, and a rotating playlist that the children help curate. Apparently, “Chicken Wing Chicken Wing” is a massive hit (I need to look this up!), and God forbid he forgets to play the “It’s Friday” song on Fridays—there would be a revolt! This year’s newest obsession? “Beautiful Things” by Benson Boone, which has become their unofficial anthem.

As Jill described their bus rides—filled with singing, laughter, and the kind of joy that only comes when kids feel truly seen—I couldn’t help thinking how different this is from the silent, sometimes scary bus rides I remember from childhood. One staff member summed it up perfectly: “Matt doesn’t just drive the bus; he creates the first moment of happiness these kids experience when they leave school. The energy he brings follows them right through our doors.”

Who knew a bus ride could be such a core memory in the making? That’s the Crayons2Pencils difference, right down to the transportation!

The Man Behind The Wheel: Matt & Jill

A Journey of Growth

The growth timeline of this place is honestly impressive!

2016: Opened first location with 6 classrooms
2017: Added the Navy classroom and the Clubhouse for after-school programs
2018: Open the Teal classroom
2019: Expanded the Red room, opened the Violet room, and upgraded the kitchen
2020: Opened their second location – Crayons2Pencils Recreations Center
2021: Transformed an old church into their dream facility (with TONS of renovations)
2023 Split the Navy room into 2 classrooms and added a Pink classroom
2024 Expanded the rec center with a new pre-K classroom and expanded the arcade room.

And they even have their own bus driven by none other than Jill’s husband! I guess he’s fully on board with her vision now!

Speaking of the arcade – OH. MY. GOODNESS . It transported me straight back to our 80s childhood! They have Frogger, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong – all those classics we used to play! The room glows in the dark with disco lights, and I was seriously tempted to ask if I could play. I can just imagine Gen X parents getting lost in there, reliving their big-hair days while Bon Jovi plays in the background! And get this – they even have their own bus, driven by none other than Jill’s husband! I guess he’s fully on board with her vision now!

Building Up Their Team

What really touched me about Crayons2Pencils is their company culture. Their mission statement is “Build the teacher up so they can build the kids up,” and they truly live by it.

The center has 75 employees, and the average staff member stays for about 3 years, which is impressive in childcare. Most of their staff didn’t have the opportunity to go to college, so Jill and Cindy offer each associate, after working their for 3 months and demonstrating a true passion for working with young children, the opportunity to enroll in TEACH Iowa program (to earn their college degree). They pay for 90% of their tuition & even give staff 48 hours of paid time off to study. In addition, they get extra raises on top of their regular raises for so many credits completed. This is optional to the teachers if they want to do this.

As Jill put it, “We believe in building a person to grow even if we are the steppingstone.” Some of their staff have gone on to become Directors of Child Care Centers themselves or are now enrolled in college, which makes Jill and Cindy incredibly proud.

Jill summed it up perfectly: “We invest in our associates, and the reality is we all must work.

Sure, there will be diapers & meltdowns and kids getting sick, but we keep coming back because we care and love what we do!” With 150 students and a staff that feels like family (Joslyn told me, “It is like a family reunion every time I come to work. I get to see all my family”), it’s no wonder this place has such a magical atmosphere.

Future Horizons

These ladies aren’t slowing down anytime soon! Jill is a Licensed Trainer with Elite Connected and is has created a Lesson Plan Books for Directors of Child Care Centers.

Jill has mentored other directors her workshops are still in production and has not launched them just yet. This is a new venture and coming in the future!

Bottom line we could not do what we do with out everyone. I am just one person but the team that we work with truly make the company what it is today. From our Nutritional Director Brenda who goes above and beyond for our teachers, children and families by hosting grill outs to our social committee that plans events and activities each year it is really because of everyone we work with that we are what we are today. The ideas come as much for me as they do from our team. My team deserves all the credit. ~Jill

An Expanding Partnership: Norwalk and Michael Foods

The Future Certainly Seems Bright for Michael Foods and Norwalk

Michael Foods, Inc. is a multi-billion-dollar company with 17 plants across the United States. They produce value-added egg and refrigerated potato products for foodservice and food ingredient customers. It is very likely you consumed one of their products the last time you ate at a restaurant, hotel, or cafeteria and didn’t even know it. Post Holdings, Inc., Michael Foods’ parent company, is investing $146 million to support the growing demands for value-added eggs.

The Norwalk facility, originally commissioned in 2019, is already expanding the plant by 132,000 sq feet and adding over 100 new jobs. The expansion includes state-of-the-art production lines, increased storage capacity, and advanced automation equipment. Additionally, its design incorporates eco-friendly practices and technologies to minimize its environmental footprint. By investing in sustainable solutions, it aims to contribute to a healthier planet while maintaining our high standards of production. The project is expected to be completed in May 2025.

Beyond job creation, the expansion of the Michael Foods’ plant will bring several other benefits to the community, including increased production capacity which expands the opportunity to partner with other local suppliers and vendors.

While it may be the end of the construction journey for this new facility, the future certainly seems bright for both Michael Foods and the Norwalk community as egg production ramps up. The Norwalk Area Chamber of Commerce gathered at the scenic Wilson’s Orchard & Farm to celebrate the achievements and dedication of community members who continuously strive to make their community a vibrant place to live, work, and visit. Against a backdrop of rustic charm and warm camaraderie, Chamber members, local leaders, and guests enjoyed a memorable evening of time together, recognition, and great food.

Spotlighting Our 2024 Award Winners

Each year, the Chamber proudly presents a series of awards that highlight the achievements of individuals and businesses going above and beyond in service to our community. This year, we were thrilled to have Denny Wulf as Emcee to introduce all the presentors of this yearʼs awards.

Here are this year’s distinguished honorees:

Teacher of the Year: Abigail Schmailzl

Oviatt Elementary chose reading interventionist Abby Schamailzl as Norwalk’s Teacher of the Year in recognition of her 20-plus years of service and exceptional skill in teaching reading. Staff unanimously praised her expertise in tailoring instruction for each student, her generosity in mentoring colleagues, and her caring approach—helping with everything from morning breakfast to afternoon bus rides. She is humble, dedicated, and has impacted hundreds of children in the community by helping them become confident readers. The school and district are proud to see her honored with this award.

Student of the Year: Henry Groos

Henry Groos has been honored as Student of the Year , exemplifying the highest standards of academic achievement, leadership, and personal character. Ranked first among 235 seniors, Henry maintains a 4.0 unweighted GPA (4.611 weighted), scored a 33 on the ACT, and will graduate with both an Associate of Arts and an Associate of Science from Des Moines Area Community College. He earned multiple academic awards, including induction into the National Honor Society and the Silver Cord for volunteer service.

Beyond academics, Henry served as the Norwalk School Board’s Student Representative and participated in the Youth Leadership Initiative, gaining recognition for his thoughtful leadership style. Admired for his genuine confidence, he is known to ask insightful questions and seek clarity during board meetings—qualities praised by both Assistant Principal Marla Frantum and fellow board members. His family, including parents Christopher and Jennifer and sister Hannah, share in the pride of his accomplishments.

Chamber Business of the Year: Middlebrook Mercantile

Middlebrook Mercantile has been honored as this year’s Middlebrook Mercantile has been honored as this year’s Chamber Business of the Year for its commitment to creating community. By hosting events like the Chamber’s monthly Women’s Collective, providing morning coffee and evening drinks, and offering live music and activities, “The Merc” has become a beloved gathering place akin to the show Cheers “because sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came.” Their willingness to collaborate with local businesses, support local artists, and create a vibrant space for the community demonstrates how they consistently go above and beyond and have fostered an environment where relationships, laughter, and memories flourish, making the Middlebrook Mercantile a truly deserving recipient of this award.

Chamber Member of the Year: Chad Stevens

We are thrilled to recognize Chad Stevens as our Chamber Member of the Year . Chad has been the heart and soul of our Chamber’s annual golf outing for 25 years, serving as committee chair the entire time. His dedication and genuine enthusiasm have turned this event into a memorable experience year after year. We are incredibly grateful for his commitment, hard work, and the positive energy he brings to each and every outing. Thank you, Chad, for a quarter century of making our golf event such a success!

Citizen of the Year: Robin Leaper

It was apparent at the Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting for the City State Bank Norwalk Fieldhouse that Robin Leaper ’s recognition as Citizen of the Year is a true testament to her leadership and the profound respect she has earned from her team and the entire community. As the Director of Parks and Recreation, Robin has not only overseen the department’s growth but also guided her team through the successful integration and promotion of new facilities like the City State Bank Norwalk Fieldhouse.

This accomplishment was no small task. It required immense understanding, coordination, and vision. Under her leadership since 2018, the Parks and Rec Department has become a cornerstone of support for Norwalk and the surrounding areas, offering extensive programs and activities that enrich the lives of residents. From creating opportunities for families to connect and thrive to promoting health, wellness, and community engagement, the department’s work is foundational to enhancing the quality of life for our residents.

Robin’s ability to bring people together, inspire her team, and deliver results that directly benefit the community underscores why she is so deserving of the Citizen of the Year honor. Her impact reaches far beyond the department, (just one example, participating and supporting Jean at the library by being at the Scribbles walk) fostering a sense of unity and pride that strengthens the very fabric of our community.

Community Footprint Award: Kate Baldwin

The Community Footprint Award , created in 2018, honors individuals whose long-term contributions and leadership have left a lasting mark on the Norwalk area. This year’s recipient is Kate Baldwin , recognized for her two decades in Norwalk school finance and her visionary approach to the district’s growth.

Kate’s leadership and financial expertise helped shape major community projects, including new schools, facility expansions, and renovations such as the Norwalk Performing Arts Center, the Physical Education and Competition Center, Warrior Stadium, and the shared Public Works facility. She also oversaw renovations at several elementary, middle, and high school buildings. These improvements not only benefited students and staff but also strengthened the broader community.

Retired in 2022, Kate soon ran for and won a seat on the school board, continuing her dedication to Norwalk. Colleagues and community leaders praise her commitment, passion for education, and willingness to engage thoughtfully with diverse perspectives. Her substantial “footprint” is evident in the many facilities and programs she helped realize—fittingly marking her as the 2025 Community Footprint Award honoree.

Honoring Outgoing Board Members

In addition to celebrating this year’s award winners, we extended our heartfelt gratitude to outgoing Chamber board members Jon Niemeyer and Tim Stephany , who have devoted their time and expertise to guide the Chamber’s mission. We also recognized our past board chair, Lorie Williamson , for her outstanding leadership and commitment. Their invaluable service continues to shape the Chamber’s vision and growth, and we are grateful for their contributions.

Coming Together in Celebration

The evening’s program included heartfelt speeches from Chamber representatives, local government officials, and past award recipients. Each spoke to the importance of coming together to acknowledge those who pour their time, talents, and hearts into making Norwalk a wonderful place to call home.

Between bites of farm-fresh delicacies, guests shared stories of collaboration and growth. Many discovered new opportunities for partnership, while others solidified long-standing connections. This spirit of unity and shared vision was clear in every corner of Wilson’s Orchard & Farm beautiful venue—a testament to the strength and warmth of our chamber communities.

Looking Forward

As we look ahead to another exciting year, the Chamber extends its deepest thanks to everyone who helped make this banquet a success: Wilsonʼs Orchard & Farm located in Cumming, Iowa hosted the event. Their venue made a beautiful backdrop for the flower arrangements provided by Bellflower Florists & Gifts where Nikki and her team thoughtfully created table centerpieces to match the program theme designed by Aubrey at Midwest Meets Design . To make the evening even more special So Bright Productions provided ambiance lighting that really made the room festive and cozy. We could not have done this event without their incredible production team. The sound was impeccable.

Standridge Receives Community Footprint Honor

Norwalk Area Chamber honors chamber founder, Newton Standridge at 2024 banquet

On January 19th, with great appreciation, we presented Newton Standridge with the chamber’s Community Footprint award. “In recognition of exceptional dedication, tremendous leadership, stewardship, and a profound impact on our community. With gratitude, we honor his remarkable contributions and celebrate the lasting impact he has created. Newton’s footprint on our community and within our Chamber will forever be etched in our hearts.”

The Community Footprint Award is reserved for individuals who have dedicated their lives to creating a lasting impact, a legacy, in our community. Other recipients of this award have included Jack & Susan Bohlender, Jack Lane, Pat Wahl, and last year’s award winner Tom McLaughlin- to name a few.

Mayor Tom Phillips was honored to present the award to Newton during the chamber’s annual awards banquet at Happy Apple Celebrations last month, saying he was introducing “one of the most influential people in the history of Norwalk”. In his speech, Mayor Phillips shared with the crowd some of Newton’s most notable contributions to the community, starting with his tenure as mayor of Norwalk from 1985 to 1993. “He led the charge for the annexation of Lakewood and Echo Valley into the city of Norwalk, causing Norwalk’s first population boost,” Mayor Phillips said. Newton shared that in 1965, Norwalk’s population was 1,700 residents and by 1990 that number had grown to 5,600 with the annexation of Lakewood. The Norwalk we know today is estimated to have surpassed 15,000 residents and continues to grow thanks to the foundation Newton built for our city.

Not only did Newton lead the town as Mayor, he was one of the founders and president of the Norwalk Area Chamber of Commerce. He is one of our greatest supporters and is always amongst the first to volunteer to support our mission, which is why he’s been awarded as Chamber Member of the Year not once but twice. He’s a reliable volunteer, an involved member, and a true ambassador for the chamber.

When Denny Wulf, former Norwalk Schools Superintendent and fellow former chamber president, learned about this year’s award recognition, he shared that “Newt always greets you with a smile and a warm handshake. A true businessman.” He then went on to say that Newton was a constant supporter of Norwalk Schools’ faculty and students, “his involvement in the Iowa Junior Chamber is just one example. He supported our schools unconditionally.” Denny shared that years ago Newton was identified as one of the top 5 most influential people in town, and he’s certainly one of the most respected and beloved people in our chamber.

Witnessing Newton accept his award was not only a highlight of the evening but an experience we as a chamber will forever cherish.

To quote Denny Wulf, “Newt is one of the finest Warriors I know”. I couldn’t agree more.

A Year Full of Possibilities Ahead

The chamber ramps up for a busy 2024

As we turn the calendar to the next page, the chamber looks forward to a year full of possibilities. With new leadership on the executive board, new faces on the board of directors, and events and professional development opportunities constantly being added to the calendar, I’m excited about what 2024 will look like for our members.

We’re starting the year off on a high note with a celebration. Join us as we honor our 2023 award winners at the chamber’s annual banquet on Jan. 19 at Happy Apple Celebrations. All chamber members and community residents are welcome to join the celebration and can register via the chamber’s website at www.norwalkchamber.org.

Our Norwalk Area Young Professionals have planned business tours, speakers, lunch and learns, and more for 2024. On Jan. 17, stop by Luana Savings Bank between 7:30 and 9 a.m. for a kickoff event with coffee and casual networking. Find out what the committee has planned for the year while enjoying a hot cup of coffee, sponsored by Luana.

Our Norwalk Area Women’s Collective plans to build on the momentum from last year by continuing to meet for coffee and discussion at the Middlebrook Mercantile from 8-9 a.m. on the second Friday of each month. Anyone from the community is welcome to attend to hear about a range of topics curated for women in business. The Collective’s mission is to offer Norwalk area businesswomen an opportunity to gather on a regular basis to network, mentor and collaborate. If that’s something you’d be interested in, please join us on Jan. 12 and feel free to bring a friend.

One change you’ll notice for 2024 is the date for our annual fundraiser RUNorwalk. Historically, this road race has taken place over Mother’s Day weekend and has coincided with the city’s spring cleanup and neighborhood garage sales. This year, the race will take place on Oct. 26, and the change in season has our planning committee full of new ideas for ways to grow the event and make it better than ever. Save the date and reach out to the chamber office if you’d like to be involved in the planning of this event.

It’s hard to believe that a year has already passed since I joined the chamber as your executive director. I’m thrilled to get to do it all over again with more experience, more connections, and even more enthusiasm for what is to come. Parting words from 2023 NACC President Travis Stanley

It’s been an honor serving as your 2023 chamber president — and what a busy year it’s been. We rolled in the new year by settling into our new, larger office and welcoming our new executive director, Lauren Ebensteiner. Lauren is a valuable asset to our chamber and the entire community. Our chamber couldn’t be prouder of the work she’s done, as she’s organized events, built relationships, strengthened connections, welcomed new businesses, and represented our chamber throughout the metro with strength. Thank you, Lauren, for a great year.

I’ve lived in Norwalk almost 10 years, and it’s exciting watching our chamber grow. Every year, more and more businesses and families choose to live and do business in Norwalk, Cumming, and our surrounding community. We are known across the metro as the exciting place to be. The stellar staffs at the city of Norwalk and the city of Cumming deserve a lot of the credit for their tireless work promoting and growing our communities. Our amazing Norwalk area schools have always been the envy of the metro, and our new superintendent, Shawn Holloway, is leading our schools to the next level. But, even more than the work of our city and school, it’s the culture of our businesses and citizenry that make Norwalk the place it is.

The great joy of being the chamber president is getting to witness firsthand the people, organizations and businesses that make Norwalk great. Though we may, at times, get a little heated with one another in the Facebook comment section, our community consistently comes together to support one another and create a positive community culture. Business owners show up to celebrate one another, even if they might be competitors. Tips and leads are shared at chamber networking events. Every church in the area joins together in the work of the Norwalk Area Ministerial Association to support those in need. Community organizations collaborate on events like Celebrate Norwalk on the 4th of July and Norwalk Musicfest. And the commitment to shop local is great here.

Our foundation in this community is strong. As we continue to grow numerically, it’s important we keep growing the culture that truly makes our community great, as we increase our support of one another, strengthen our civility and respect, seek out greater diversity, and ensure that everyone who lives, works and does business in the Norwalk area thrives. During this holiday season, let us be grateful for the community we live in. A place like this doesn’t happen by accident; it is the work of us all, committing to doing our part to make the whole strong. Thank you for all that you do.

The Deep Community Roots of a Chamber

Supporting local businesses AND community

When I was growing up, my parents owned an Amish furniture store in a small Iowa town. For a short

time, our family lived in the apartment above the shop, which meant my younger sister and I literally

grew up in that furniture store.

On weekends, we would help my parents by answering the phone, bagging gift items, dusting

and vacuuming the showroom, and I remember learning how to count back change to customers with

the utmost patience. I loved helping my mom stage the window displays, and to this day hearing Nat

King Cole puts me right back in that furniture shop as a young girl. You could say my fondness for small

businesses stems from my upbringing. I appreciate the hard work and sacrifice (the kind that sometimes

means raising your family in a cramped apartment above your business) that goes into building the

American dream.

Despite being a child of small business owners, my only connection to a chamber of commerce was

a memory from attending a holiday cookie walk hosted by the chamber of that small town. I’ve always

known they were tied to business (everyone knows that much, right?) but until last year I had no idea

how deep the roots of chambers run in each community. The mission of the Norwalk Area Chamber of

Commerce is to promote, connect, and grow member organizations while working to enhance the

quality of life and economic development in the Norwalk area. How do we do that? It comes down to

two priorities:

1. Support Local Businesses through...

...Visibility and Promotion (Did you know that when consumers know that a business is a

member of their local chamber, they are 80% more likely to purchase goods or services from

them?)

...Networking opportunities like membership lunches, events, socials, and committees

...Resources and information like advertising opportunities, roundtable discussions, and

professional development

...Advocacy at the local, state, and national level

2. Support Local Community through...

...Events like the 4th of July parade and Party in the Park, RUNorwalk, and Music Fest

...Volunteerism

...Philanthropic initiatives like our annual food drive for the food pantry, luncheon for new

In short, the chamber is an invaluable asset for local businesses and I am thankful to have the

opportunity to carry out many of the chamber’s priorities on a daily basis. I love connecting our

members to resources, making introductions, sharing information, and promoting our business

community in any way I can. I deeply respect our business owners and chamber members and thank my

parents for instilling in me the appreciation for the world of commerce through watching them own a

small business. It’s led me here, loving what I do!

Supporting local restaurants helps community

If you are dining out, dine IN town!

“Support local restaurants. Eat local. If you are dining out, dine in town.” The late Judy Corcoran made this plea during a speech at our awards banquet in January, and her words have stuck with me. My job is to do everything I can to support local businesses and so Judy’s plea, is also mine. When choosing catering for an event, or a spot to host a coffee or lunch meeting, I always look to the chamber’s list of member-owned businesses first. Outside of work, I enjoy frequenting these same businesses with my family and love seeing the familiar faces of the staff and other patrons.

Supporting local restaurants isn’t just about enjoying a meal. These establishments are more than just places to eat, they are hubs for social connection where people from the community gather to share good food and company. Winn’s Pizza and Steakhouse is a great example of this. Their motto “Enter as Strangers, Leave as Friends” is proudly painted on their wall and it’s a spot in town that you can almost guarantee you’ll see a familiar face every time you visit. This sense of community is essential for building a strong local identity and promoting a feeling of belonging.

The incredible owners and staff of our local restaurants are deeply embedded in the community. They build relationships with their customers that go above and beyond mere transactions. Several of our local businesses participate in a food rescue program that donates food that would otherwise be thrown out, to Norwalk families in need. As a chamber, we’ve been proud to partner with local restaurant owners to cater various meals, including our annual luncheon for the school’s newest teachers.

Another significant advantage of supporting local restaurants is the economic impact it has on the community. Our local restaurants are primarily small and independently owned and generate revenue that stays within our community. They create jobs ranging from cooks and servers to managers and support staff, offering opportunities for residents and contributing to a lower unemployment rate.

Local restaurants often prioritize using fresh, locally sourced ingredients which directly impacts the quality of their dishes and menu options. One example is Pyra Pizzaria who uses Graziano Brother’s sausage from Des Moines! Patrons can enjoy a more unique dining experience from our local restaurants compared to bigger (or chain) restaurants in the metro.

You can feel good knowing that when you choose to dine locally, you’re actively participating in the economic prosperity of our community and likely helping a local entrepreneur and their family live out their dream. Calling all local women in business!

Last fall, our chamber had the privilege of hosting the Warren County Women’s Mentoring Event in Norwalk. Dozens of local women registered for the morning event where a panel of speakers including Christina Moffatt, Alicia Benson, Rachelle Hunt, and Jill Anderson delved into topics like cultivating confidence and embracing risk. The post-event feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Participants said they left feeling empowered and inspired and wanted to continue that feeling somehow. Acknowledging a clear community demand for ongoing support catered to women in business, the chamber sprang into action.

The chamber created the Norwalk Area Women’s Collective (NAWC), a committee with a mission to offer Norwalk area businesswomen an opportunity to gather on a regular basis to network, mentor, and collaborate. Each month, all are welcome to join the committee at the Middlebrook Mercantile for coffee and discussion (no chamber membership required!). Topics are predetermined and stem from committee discussions, current events, or special requests. On occasion, guest speakers lead the discussion and recent speakers have included Orchard Hills Principal Sheila Taylor and the Chairman of the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women, Elizabeth Coonan. Since the first coffee in March, the group has discussed women’s history, work-life balance, health and nutrition, philanthropy, volunteerism, and women’s equality. To complement these discussions, the NAWC committee provides take-home resources including links to relevant articles, videos, podcasts, or websites.

For those who have not yet experienced coffee with the Norwalk Area Women’s Collective, I invite you to put it on your calendar and join us on the second Friday of each month from 8-9 a.m. at the Mercantile in Cumming. Our committee aims to create an inviting, casual environment for honest conversation and loves to see familiar faces month after month. The Mercantile offers a menu of coffee, tea, and pastries for purchase so come early and get settled in. Registration through the chamber website is encouraged and open to anyone who wants to join. Upcoming discussion topics include Warren County conservation, organization, and shopping local with a fun holiday celebration to wrap up the year. Last, but not least, please save the date for this year’s Warren County Women’s Mentoring Event which is set to take place on September 28 at the Red Acre Barn in Indianola. Together with the Carlisle and Indianola chambers, we’ve planned an engaging morning of speakers, discussions, and connection. Chamber recommendations for professional development opportunities

When it comes to investing in your professional development, finding opportunities can be challenging yet essential to career growth and success. The chamber is a great resource for those looking to gain leadership experience, engage with their community, serve on committees, network with others (including community and business leaders), and learn about a range of business-focused topics. In addition to joining your local chamber, here are some of my favorite ways to invest in yourself professionally.

• Join a group or committee: Being part of professional groups or committees is an excellent way to expand your network and gain valuable experiences. Young Professionals groups, alumni associations, non-profit organizations, and local breakfast clubs often provide platforms to connect with like-minded individuals and potential mentors.

• Attend events and workshops: Getting out of the office to attend industry shows, workshops and seminars can expose you to the latest trends and best practices in your field. I recommend the annual Leadership Institute through Warren County Economic Development. This eight-session series covers topics like project management, fundraising, and DEI and is taught by local leaders who are familiar with the unique strengths and challenges of our community. • Invest time in webinars and podcasts: In addition to attending workshops and events, consider exploring webinars and podcasts related to your industry or areas of interest. These resources often feature experts sharing valuable insights, tips and strategies.

• Establish a mentorship: Having a mentor can be invaluable for your professional growth. They can offer guidance, insights and career advice based on their own experiences. Finding a mentor among your colleagues, bosses, coaches or admired professionals can provide you with personalized support on your career journey.

• Read: Books and online resources are treasure troves of knowledge. Seek out books, articles and online recommendations related to your industry or areas of interest.

• Attend networking events: Build connections with other professionals through networking events and conferences. This can lead to new opportunities, provide valuable insights into industries outside your own, and help you build a referral base.

• Set goals: Regularly take time to reflect on your career goals and progress. Set specific and measurable objectives for your professional development and track your achievements. Seek out constructive criticism from your peers and superiors to help you identify areas for improvement. Investing in your professional development is an ongoing journey.

Embrace a growth mindset and actively seek ways to expand your knowledge and skill set. A combination of continuous learning, networking and persistence will contribute to achieving your career goals and overall professional success. The Importance of Volunteerism

Volunteers necessary to keep local events alive

Teamwork makes the dream work. It takes a village. Many hands make light work. Pick your favorite phrase. They can all be applied to describe the need for community involvement in making local events possible. Norwalk is described as having a small-town feel and a strong sense of community, which some fear we’ll lose as our town continues to grow. I’d like to propose that, if everyone committed to volunteering for just one shift, at one event during the year, we’d not only keep our sense of community intact but foster a more supportive and caring one. We’d also share in the benefits of more attractions, more events and more investment from our local (or new) businesses.

Volunteering allows you to learn more about the needs, challenges and strengths of your community, which results in your becoming a more informed and engaged citizen. You become aware of local issues and initiatives that are working towards positive change. You get to know your neighbors and make new friends and have a unique opportunity to work alongside local business owners and community leaders. All of this preserves the small-town feel of Norwalk.

At present, most of our local events are organized and supported by the same handful of volunteers who sacrifice their time for the benefit of others, time and time again. The same few names pop up on volunteer registrations and offer to chair committees. To give an example, as we prepare for the Fourth of July celebration (which is expected to attract more than 2,000 people) we have fewer than 10 volunteers signed up.

Pre-pandemic, the number of volunteers was far greater, and the work of event execution was shared by many. Today, our small pool of committee members and local volunteers are burning out from the pressure of running on very little support, often while experiencing criticism and negativity from an online peanut gallery.

Events like the Fourth of July parade and party in the park, RUNorwalk, Music Fest, and the holiday tree lighting, cannot continue without more support from the community. Organizations like ours and Norwalk Hometown Pride do not have the manpower to sustain these events alone. There’s a shared responsibility as a citizen to do your part in helping to keep traditions you enjoy alive.

I urge you to do what you can to make our community a little better. Sign up for a volunteer shift, speak up when you see misinformation being spread online, and remember to thank volunteers every chance you get. Next time you’re enjoying a public event, try to remember that the volunteers around you have given up their holiday/evening/weekend so that you can enjoy yours. Then consider taking a turn. n

NACC Scholarship recipients announced

One of the chamber’s favorite initiatives is the scholarship program for graduating Norwalk High School seniors. Each spring, dozens of students apply for these scholarships which are then reviewed by a task force of chamber members. Students submit their transcripts, two short essays, and a letter of recommendation from an employer, coach or teacher. This year, our scholarship committee was impressed by the students’ work experience, extracurriculars and volunteer hours, which made making the decision for the three scholarship recipients a challenge. While the committee took the students’ transcripts into account, it was the essays that gave the reviewers insight into the character and work ethic of the applicants. Many students spent their high school years working for local businesses and noted that those opportunities helped shape their path to college and that they hoped to return to Norwalk after schooling.

This year, the chamber made the program available to students who plan on attending a trade or technical school in the fall. The goal was to expand the pool of applicants and support students on multiple career paths. The pandemic brought awareness to the need for the trades, and it’s anticipated that more and more students will choose this route.

Funding for the chamber’s scholarships comes from our annual golf outing, which happens to be a favorite among members. This year, our golf outing will take place at Legacy Golf Course on June 21, and my goal is to generate enough funds to support an additional scholarship for 2024. Our scholarship committee hopes to revamp our program for next year and has been discussing ways we can better support our graduates and make a bigger impact, even looking at ways to support students going directly into the workforce. Change takes time, but with the forwardthinking leadership we have on the committee, I know innovation is bound to happen.

I am proud to announce this year’s scholarship recipients are Chloe Martin, Jonathan Tague, and our 2022 Student of the Year, William “Will” Chase. Chloe and Jonathan will be attending Iowa State University in the fall, and Will plans to attend the University of Iowa. We are proud to have them represent Norwalk as they make their way out in the world and wish them all nothing but success.

Student & Teacher Honors Recognized

Chamber and school district honor Student of the Year and Teacher of the Year

Before the seniors throw their caps and the kids are home for summer, I wanted to congratulate the Chamber’s 2022 Teacher of the Year, Angela Davidson, and Student of the Year, William “Will” Chase. The chamber presented these awards in January at the annual awards banquet, and, in the months since, it has been wonderful to see both Angela and Will out in the community being ambassadors for the school and town.

Angela was nominated for Teacher of the Year by the school district office and leaders within the district. Norwalk High School Principal Chris Basinger presented the award and spoke about Angela’s successes as the high school’s art teacher. She was awarded for her dynamic teaching style, often taking it beyond the classroom. Her work can be seen around the community from the halls of the school to the walls of public buildings, and she enlists students to help her with these projects. Most recently, Angela donated her time and talent to the Norwalk Easter Public Library Foundation’s Chair-ish fundraiser, having created a Norwalk Warriors-themed stool to be auctioned off for the organization. It’s an honor to have Angela as the recipient of the chamber’s award, and we appreciate that she shares her passion for the arts with our Norwalk youth.

Student of the Year Will Chase is an impressive young leader and a well-deserving winner of the award. Over his high school career, Will has participated in large group speech, student council, National Honor Society, varsity show choir, varsity track, varsity swimming, and marching band (to name a few of his activities). As a student leader, it’s no surprise that Will is also a peer mentor to ninth graders. Academically, Will is ranked third in his class with a 4.0 GPA and will graduate this spring with his associate of arts and associate of science degrees from DMACC. Will’s acceptance speech at the banquet was a highlight of the evening, and we couldn’t have been more impressed with how humble and poised he was. We wish him the best as he heads off to college to pursue a degree in environmental engineering.

I’m grateful for our partnership with the school and love that we get to honor these individuals within the chamber. I look forward to continuing this tradition and celebrating again in 2023. Event planning gets into high gear

Planning for spring and summer events commence

The Chamber has welcomed spring as a sign it’s time to kick event planning into high gear. It’s a busy season, in general, with graduation parties, weddings and summer vacations on the horizon, and we, at the chamber, hope you’ll consider putting some of our favorite community events on your calendar. By supporting chamber events, you support the community by keeping your money local, and proceeds from our events benefit local charities and organizations.

On May 13, the chamber will host its annual RUNorwalk event where runners and walkers of all ages will race along the streets of Norwalk. New in 2023 is the addition of a 10K route for athletes looking for a longer distance race. The route will begin at Norwalk High School at the Anytime Fitness Starting Line where athletes will take off after the Gregg Young Chevrolet Pace Car. Runners and walkers will make their way through town and return to the school to cross the finish line on the track and enjoy cold water and refreshments provided by City State Bank. Norwalk Family Dentistry has sponsored the Kids Fun Run, a short-distance race on the high school track for kids ages 8 and younger (no registration is required for the Kids Fun Run). A portion of the RUNorwalk event proceeds will benefit the Norwalk Area Food Pantry. Stop by Fareway (1711 Sunset Drive) from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on April 13 to register in person or to donate non-perishable items during the RUNorwalk food drive. The chamber’s annual golf outing will take place on June 21 at the Legacy Golf Course. Golfers can register to hit the links and network with other chamber and community members. Proceeds from this event go toward the chamber’s scholarship fund. Each year, the Scholarship Task Force selects graduating Norwalk High School seniors to receive scholarships that can be used toward college or trade school. Registration is now open for the golf outing and can be found on the chamber’s website.

We’re excited to work with Hometown Pride, among other groups, to put on this year’s Celebrate Norwalk event on the Fourth of July. We’re hoping for good weather and a great turnout for the parade, party in the park and fireworks show. Mark your calendar and stay tuned for more information as planning gets underway.

Chamber announces Citizen, Member, and Business of the Year Award Recipients

Something our 2022 award winners have in common is they all exemplify the strength of community spirit and the joy of working together for the common good. It is their selfless acts of service that bring about meaningful and lasting change in our community, and it is my privilege to further celebrate their achievements with you.

Former Chamber President and current Second Vice President Amanda Reid-Raper was the unanimous choice for the Chamber Member of the Year Award. Amanda has served on the chamber board in some capacity for nearly 10 years and is a genuine ambassador for the chamber’s mission. Whether it’s leading a committee, setting up for an event, or helping to hire and onboard a chamber director, Amanda’s guidance and leadership have made her someone the chamber can always rely on. We thank her for her commitment to the people and businesses of our community and the causes that matter to them.

We were honored to recognize the incredible group of women who make up the nonprofit organization Women of Norwalk with our Citizen of the Year award. What was once a handful of women organizing community service projects has grown into a membership of roughly 50 local women giving back. The group supports its efforts through fundraising with merchandise sales, Trivia Nights and Bunco. The WON’s motto is “Give Where You Live” and, for them, that means awarding an annual scholarship to Norwalk graduates, supporting students who struggle with food insecurity by providing gift cards through their Backpack Program, and assisting families who need help with childcare expenses. Our 2022 Business of the Year Award was presented to Winn’s Pizza & Steakhouse, which has been a Norwalk favorite since 2015. Andrew Nguyen accepted the award saying, “What drives me each day is knowing I can go to work and have the ability to make somebody’s day better one table and one meal at a time.” That sentiment is echoed by the restaurant’s motto, “Enter as strangers, leave as friends,” and through their contributions to the community. Congratulations to Winn’s and please remember to dine in town when dining out.

A Lifetime of Service

NACC Celebrates Tom McLaughlin with the 2022 Community Footprint Award

On Jan. 20, we hosted our annual awards banquet at the Wright Place Event Center where dozens of chamber and community members joined us for a night of celebration. 2022 marked our 30th year as a Chamber of Commerce, and we were honored to have so many of our founding members and past board members in attendance for the banquet. The room felt like it was full of old friends.

In addition to celebrating our student (Will Chase), educator (Angela Davidson), chamber member (Amanda Reid-Raper), citizen (Women of Norwalk), and business of the year (Winn’s Pizza & Steakhouse), the chamber awarded Tom McLaughlin with the Community Footprint Award. This award was created by the chamber in 2015 as a legacy award to honor those who have left a lasting impact on our community. Former Norwalk Community School District Superintendent Denny Wulf presented the award, and his recounting of Tom’s lifetime achievements was a highlight of the evening.

In 1967, years before the chamber was established, Tom started his career as a teacher with the Norwalk Community School District. For 13 years, he taught biology, physical science and physical education. While working as a teacher, Tom attended Drake University to obtain his degree in administration and eventually became the principal of Norwalk elementary schools, Oviatt and Lakewood. As a community leader and educator, he initiated the preschool program, all-day kindergarten and student-led conferencing. He was awarded the Governor’s Award for his work with the Norwalk Head Start Center. Tom founded Norwalk’s Special Education Program and the Gifted Program and is well known for having also founded Norwalk’s wrestling program.

Under Tom’s leadership as head coach, the Warriors had 114 wins (with only 26 losses), 40 tournament championships, 13 conference championships, six sectionals and one district championship. His work and dedication to the wrestling program led to his induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (2013), Iowa’s Dan Gable Wrestling Hall of Fame (2013) and the Norwalk Athletic Hall of Fame (2017).

Since his retirement from administration, Tom has continued to work in security and groundskeeping for the district and has proudly been part of the NCSD staff for 56 years (and counting).

Tom’s career has made an indelible impact on countless individuals and the community. By honoring his lifetime achievements, as well as recognizing his ongoing commitment, we can ensure that these efforts continue to be celebrated for generations to come.

Chamber members create opportunities for locals to beat the winter blues

I am delighted to wish you all a very happy New Year and introduce myself as the new executive director of the Norwalk Area Chamber of Commerce. As a Norwalk resident myself, I can’t wait to spend 2023 getting to know the people and businesses that make up our community.

This winter, I encourage you to join me in shopping small by attending one-of-a-kind events, activities and workshops that have been curated by our area businesses. Investing in these experiences is a great way to support your community while learning a new skill, discovering a new hobby or making a new friend.

Not sure where to start? Visit the Business Directory at www.norwalkchamber.org for a list of area businesses. From there, you can visit individual websites and check their event calendars. Social media is another great place to find upcoming events. Many activities and events require registration and have associated costs, so please be prepared ahead of time. Below are a few things to put on your calendar this winter.

The Norwalk Easter Public Library does a fantastic job keeping its calendar full of activities for all ages. Their regularly scheduled programs include Storytime and Babytime for children, their weekly Teen Takeover, and Geri-Fit, which is designed for seniors. They also frequently host adult craft nights, yoga and family-friendly movie showings. In January, they’ll host an Antiques Roadshow event and kick off their Sewing with Charlene series.

Iowa Distilling Company has a calendar full of live music, trivia and an assortment of craft nights. In January, they’ll host both a Board & Brush event and a workshop where attendees will create their own chunky blanket. Enjoy handcrafted cocktails while you craft.

Get to know other dog owners at Paws + Pints, where they host breed-specific Monday Meetups and Thursday night trivia. In January, they’ll host a Single’s Night where single dog moms and dads can enjoy drinks while playing Bingo.

Ted Lare Garden Center has several workshops planned for the winter months. Create your own planter, terrarium or succulent topiary. If plants aren’t your thing, try your hand at a needle-felted succulent, paint your own Mandala stones or attend a pressed flower workshop. No green thumb required.

The Mercantile in Cumming hosts a different event each month, with a DIY candle workshop in January. Their winter calendar includes a chunky blanket workshop, a floral watercolor project and a pressed flower activity.

Don’t let cabin fever creep up this year. Take advantage of these great happenings around town and shop small. I hope to see you out there.

New chamber office and new executive director in the works

As I write this our chamber office is busy preparing for new opportunities. We have a new intern, Haley Cooper, from the Norwalk High School training into our office systems and learning about graphic design and marketing. Sarah Gunsaulus who has been working for us since April is busy organizing our Annual Awards and Tree Lighting events. I have been busy managing our newest project...a new office space.

The office next to us (Suite 4) that used to be the Cash N Go has double our current space and is being renovated into a new professional space for our growing chamber. Several businesses have stepped up and made our renovations easier by donating items and bringing their talent to the table. We want to give a big THANK YOU to Eggers Bilt Homes our landlord who has helped manage and guide the construction process. They have updated lighting, plumbing and HVAC for the new space. Eric Simon from SHYFT Collective is also a NACC board director and has helped get a fresh coat of paint on the walls and managed carpet installers and new flooring with Chris and Dana at Flooring America. Flooring America has donated stylish new commercial carpet tiles that will make the new space look amazing. Thank you to these partners in this process. We appreciate your support! Another big change is I have been offered a new position as the Director of Marketing and Business Development at Warren County Economic Development working alongside Executive Director Rachel Gocken. I have been at the chamber for six years and my favorite part has been getting to know all of our amazing members that contribute to this thriving community. I cannot thank everyone enough for giving me this opportunity to serve the Norwalk area. I am grateful and look forward to serving you more on a county level in my new role. My hope is that a new director will bring fresh energy and ideas to lead our community on the next leg of our journey. We're excited to celebrate with you!

We are excited to share that July 10 ^th of this year marks an important milestone for our chamber. We are celebrating 30 years as an organization! For those of you who do not know… a chamber of commerce is a voluntary partnership of businesses and professionals working together to build a healthy economy and improve the quality of life in a community. Our mission at the Norwalk area chamber is to promote, connect and grow member organizations while working to enhance the quality of life and economic development in the Norwalk area. This doesn’t mean that our members are only from Norwalk, Cumming, Martinsdale, etc. Our membership includes any business that is doing business or interested in doing business with our community. You’ll find our members are intensely focused on making the Norwalk area a great place to live, work and play. We’re like family here and we promote each other.

Our chamber began with an enthusiastic group of businesses meeting monthly. They weren’t sure if becoming an organization was needed. It took some convincing and support from several passionate Norwalk business leaders and The Greater Des Moines Partnership to spearhead this chamber. Now we are an organization with around 230 members that include 198 thriving businesses and organizations. Events and meetings used to be monthly and now we are hosting two to three meetings or events per week. This has led us to add staff and prepare as our organization grows with our thriving community.

The Norwalk Area Chamber has much to offer its members. We are more than meetings! The chamber offers leadership opportunities, ways to promote your business online, an amplified legislative voice, and an affiliate membership with the Greater Des Moines Partnership . We also organize community events. Thank you to all who came out for our 2 ^nd Annual Celebrate Norwalk Party in City Park. The City of Norwalk was gracious in their support and helping us get everything ready for our citizens to celebrate. A special thank you goes out to our volunteer committee. We also want to thank our sponsors who made the event possible including Michael Foods, City State Bank, Gregg Young Chevrolet, Capital City Fruit, Casey's, Crayons 2 Pencils, Hildreth Brothers Construction, Kappelman Appliance and Norwalk Chiropractic.

We are excited to celebrate our 30 ^th anniversary in various ways this year starting with our Annual Banquet in January of 2023. More details to come as the time gets closer. You can enjoy non-stop live music from various bands all day, plus food, games and more.

Scholarship Winners Announced!

NACC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AWARDS FOUR SCHOLARSHIPS
TO NORWALK HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

One of our favorite initiatives at the chamber is the NACC Scholarship program. Each year our scholarship committee reviews around 30 or so applications from seniors at the Norwalk High School for the opportunity to receive a $500 scholarship to pursue college. The rising cost of a college education and living expenses is challenging our students. Thankfully, our community businesses and organizations have stepped up to provide 94 scholarships totaling over $60,000 to help students get a leg up on college tuition and books. I personally have had one senior graduate in the top 10 of her class and even though her academics were on point and she completed many applications the scholarship funds were a challenge to get. This challenge shows how these local scholarships are so important as every bit helps a student on their path to a higher education.

Last year the chamber decided to offer four scholarships instead of three. One scholarship always goes to the student of the year chosen by the Norwalk High School. This year’s recipient was Grant Kimball a very talented Norwalk High School graduate that has been accepted at West Point, the United States Naval Academy and US Air Force Academy. We wish him all the best in his endeavors.

The remaining three NACC Scholarship recipients this year were announced at the Norwalk Honors Night on May 19. The honorees are Alexis Popken, Hannah Kehoe, and Sydney Fisher. Alexis and Hannah plan on attending the University of Iowa in the fall and Sydney will attend Iowa State University. We are so proud of all our scholarship recipients and Norwalk High School graduates and look forward to seeing their next accomplishments as move forward in their college education.

The chamber funds these scholarships through various events. The Celebrate Norwalk 4 ^th of July Party in the Park and Norwalk Music Fest are two events that the chamber hosts a beer tent with a special tip jar. All proceeds from the tip jars go to our scholarship fund. We also hold an Annual Golf Outing which will be held at Legacy Golf this year on June 16 ^th . Mulligan sales from the event also help fund our scholarships. “It’s for the kids” as we say.

We are grateful to have such a giving community that cares for its citizens at every level. I like to think it is our true superpower.

Citizen of the Year 2021

2021 Citizen of the Year Recipient

Matthew Morgan was awarded Citizen of the Year at the annual banquet. He is Founder of the Iowa League of Heroes which is recognized by multiple law enforcement agencies throughout Iowa as well as the Iowa Secretary of State. In 2018, the League received a Proclamation Certificate from the Governor of Iowa, claiming March 21st as Iowa League of Heroes Day!

Matthew has obtained multiple awards through the past ten years from organizations such as the Urbandale Police Department, Best Buddies Program, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and many others. Additionally, Matthew is the author of three children's books and the founder of One Life Books. His first children's book, Stella From Pella and Her Magic Shoe was rated #1 on Amazon's New Releases in Children's Short Stories in 2018! His second book, Dirty, Stupid Cancer also received a #1 rating on Amazon's New Releases in Children's Illness in 2019!

Honoring Grant kimball for Student of the Year

Grant Kimball is the son of Laura and Jeff Kimball of Norwalk. Grant has an older brother Dean, who graduated from NHS in 2020, a younger sister Brooke, who is in 10 grade, and a younger brother Jack, who is in 5th grade. Grant currently ranks in the top 5% in the class of 2022 and has a 3.96 grade point average on a 4.00 scale. He has received his academic pin/bar each year and has been on the honor roll each semester. Grant will receive the Distinguished Norwalk Achievement diploma. By the end of his senior year he is on track to have completed seven college courses from Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) and fourteen AP Collegeboard/advanced courses.

Grant wants to enter a US Service Academy and continue on to serve the United States of America. Grant has been a leader at Norwalk High School in band as a letter winner, part of numerous honor bands, and soloist awards. In the area of athletics, Grant has been on the wrestling, football, and tennis teams.

Grant participated in the American Legion boys state for Norwalk, Iowa and received numerous accolades from the event. He also spent most of his summer attending camps and programs to prepare himself for his future. Grant is a role model for current and future Warriors.

Honoring Deanna Gingrich for Member of the Year

Last week, the Norwalk Chamber recognized City of Norwalk Economic Development Program Coordinator Deanna Gingrich, as their Member of the Year.

Deanna has been a resident of Norwalk for 14 years. She started working for the City of Norwalk in 2017, and joined the Economic Development Department shortly after.

Deanna spearheaded Norwalk Hometown Pride 4 years ago, and is the Hometown Pride Chair. Just about any event happening in the City, you’ll see Deanna’s smiling face.

Acknowledging Unity Point for business of the year

It is understandable that our current state of crisis healthcare workers were top of mind when thinking about choosing award worthy members in our community. But when our Awards committee considered business of the year nominations and looked at businesses who perform at the top of their industry, who have dedicated employees, who offer to volunteer in all areas of our community, who sponsor local events and give back we could find no other business more noteworthy in 2021 than the physicians and staff at Unity Point Clinic.

Unity Point clinic opened in here Norwalk July of 2000. Currently they have 8 physicians and 1 physician assistant and just signed a new nurse practitioner to start in April of this year. They have 31 hard working staff members.

They provide care for people of all ages, they provide a number of important health-related services. In addition to routine checkups, immunizations, annual physical exams and other preventive care, they can provide a variety of services for your physical, emotional and mental health. Unity Point also offers care for injuries, acute medical conditions, and chronic diseases.

The doctors, nurses and staff at Unity Point are ingrained in our community. Most live here and have children in our school. They show up to assist with community events and always eager to donate locally. Unity Point has also been a proud sponsor of the chamber’s RUNorwalk 5K for years. We have presented the 2021 Business of the Year to Unity Point Clinic Norwalk. Dr. Chase, shown in photo, accepted the award at our annual awards banquet.

Celebrating Wendall Kaldenberg

2021 Community Footprint Award Recipient

As a long-standing Norwalk citizen and business owner, Wendell “Wendy” Kaldenberg has managed to leave an admirable and truly positive community footprint, and he’s not done yet!

Arriving in town as a teen, and graduating with the class of 1959, Wendy Kaldenberg decided to make Norwalk his home and has been in his current residence for 57 years!

As a young man he joined the Norwalk Volunteer Fire Department and was committed to our community’s public safety for 43 years. When the new fire station opened in 2007, Kaldenberg was awarded Firefighter of the Year. And even though he officially retired in 2018, he continues to volunteer in a supportive role for Norwalk Fire and Rescue.

The mid-80s saw the purchase of Jimmy’s Restaurant on Main Street and in 1994, Wendy’s Ice Cream was added. Selling ice cream must have captured Wendy’s heart and in 1997 he sold Jimmy’s (twice!) and in 2000 moved Wendy’s Ice Cream to its current location on Sunset Drive.

Wendy has had the honor of working with some amazing staff and it’s apparent that his own fair and friendly personality made quite the impression. When he had to re-open Jimmy’s in 1997, his previous staff showed up on opening night asking what they could do to help. Since then he’s had two full generations working for him. Some of his original employees now have children swirling those delicious ice cream cones we all love.

Wendell Kaldenberg has always been one to step up. He’s been a Norwalk Mason, Shriner for 20 years and is a founding member of the Norwalk Area Chamber, started in 1992. His commitment to the Norwalk community through his decades of public service and as an employer doesn’t end there. His business continues to make donations to local charities including the Norwalk Public Easter Library, Knights of Columbus, The Lions Club, American Legion, various school activities as well as local events.

It is with complete pride, admiration and appreciation that the Norwalk Area Chamber of Commerce honors Wendell “Wendy” Kaldenberg with the 2022 Community Footprint Award.

Tribute to Patricia "Pat" Wahl

2021 Community Footprint Recipient

The Norwalk Area Chamber held its 29 ^th Annual Awards Soirée on January 21 at The Wright Place Events Center. Each year we honor a business, member, student, educator and citizen with a special award. Back when the chamber was celebrating it’s 25 ^th year then president, Mark Miller, asked for a new Community Footprint Award to be created. The Community Footprint Award honors the lifetime legacy left behind by the actions of dedicated individual(s) or organizations. The footprints created by this person(s)/organization have left a lasting impression on the Norwalk community and will continue to inspire its success.

This year the chamber honored two Community Footprint Awards to two very deserving people. The first award went to Pat Wahl. Although we were planning on honoring Pat in person, sadly she passed away a couple weeks ago. We were honored to have her son, Mike Jr., and daughter, Katie, attend to accept the award on her behalf.

Feisty and energetic are just a couple of words to describe Pat Wahl. She believed in standing up for what is right and wasn’t afraid to do so. She made Norwalk her home and was proud to serve her community in many different and impactful ways.

As a US Postal Service Letter Carrier and Union rep, Pat’s ability to keep everything and everyone around her in-line and on time was evident. She went on to become an amazing public servant for our community serving 20 years as a member and chair for Emergency 911 and as the first female city council member for nearly three decades. Pat was also our first female mayor, serving proudly from 2006-2008.

Pat also loved having fun. She was a beloved Boy Scouts troop leader, was instrumental in bringing back the Soap Box Derby Tournament to Norwalk, orchestrated and organized the 4th of July parade for years as well as the Town and Country Festival in the park after the parade.

Patricia “Pat” Wahl has left an indelible mark on our community, and we at the chamber are honored to recognize her contributions to Norwalk with the 2021 Community Footprint award.

Mental Health: Committing to Yourself in the New Year

A Partnership Perk from the Greater Des Moines Partnership

As we jump into 2022 and start making New Year’s Resolutions, keep in mind your mental health and ways to take care of yourself besides just the basics.

Here are some ideas for supporting your mental health in 2022:

Do you have a good balance between different activities, work, leisure and family? If they are not in balance, make plans to get them back into balance.
Are you getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, exercising, and interacting with people?
Have you planned to see your primary care provider for your yearly checkup?
Are you doing daily chores, keeping the house picked up, showering regularly, getting dressed to "go to work", even if you are working from home?

Some ways to kickstart your resolutions are:

Try relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, tai chi or guided imagery. Even a few minutes of this can help you reset.
Explore art therapy or coloring
Listen to music
Seek out some sun and/or bright light, preferably in the morning
Get some sort of regular exercise
Maintain a sleep routine
Keep focused on healthy eating habits

New Faces New Places

Welcoming new businesses to Norwalk

Our chamber office has been busy with ribbon cuttings as we welcomed many of the new businesses to town. We celebrated three ribbon cuttings with Norwalk Parks and Recreation for the Elizabeth Holland Park, Windflower Pickleball Courts and Great Western Trail projects. These new features in Norwalk have been amazing additions for our residents to enjoy.

The Johnson Retail Center had a fun community event with three ribbon cuttings celebrating the opening of True Roots Chiropractic, Rock Valley Physical Therapy and Johnson Orthodontics of Norwalk. The remaining business, Bellflower Florist and Gifts, will have a ribbon cutting celebration after their official opening. Another exciting ribbon cutting event and grand opening celebration happened at Holland Farms Senior Living with a reception that included food, music, and tours. We also welcomed Auburn Moon Boutique as a new online business based in Norwalk.

Several new business members have joined the chamber including Amore Pets of Norwalk, Iowa Hearing Center, Greater Des Moines Home Builders Association and Rexco Equipment, Inc. We are excited to have these businesses join our valued membership.

Our chamber has received a few requests for the new Iowa maps. Those wanting to travel with a paper map can stop by the chamber office and pick up the new 2021-2022 Iowa Map from the Iowa DOT. Office hours are Monday thru Friday 9 am to 4 pm or by appointment.

Opportunities chambers shouldn't miss

Connection has been our 2021 mantra at the chamber as we left 2020 in our rearview mirror. Since February NACC has hosted seven Connect Networking, smaller monthly networking events to give members a less structured way to meet in person. These events successfully gathered 20-30 members at various restaurants and locations around the Norwalk area. As 2021 carried on other challenges unearthed. Volunteers were hard to find, events were a challenge to plan and businesses were dealing with the strain of going back to the office. People were straddling between stressed and happy to experience little bits of normalcy in the sea of new changes.

The chamber board was ready for some training to get us ready and fine-tuned for 2022. We gathered everyone to attend a board training event hosted by the Greater Des Moines Partnership and were surprised when this training event became a springboard of inspiration for the future of our chamber. We wanted to share with you some of the ideas we look forward to bringing to our chamber very soon.

Casey Steinbacher, author of “Relevant to Essential”, presented five opportunities chambers shouldn’t miss. The first idea was to host curated meetings. Networking is nice but curating a meeting where we strategically invite specific members to the table to talk on issues in our community or introduce new members can be impactful. Another idea Casey strongly suggested is creating sharable online content and be a transformational influencer in our community. If a high schooler can be an influencer from their bedroom using a phone so can a chamber. Unfortunately, most chambers don’t take advantage of this opportunity due to lack of technical skill or understanding of how to get started. Video or social media that puts together the pieces to lead a community through its issues can be transformational. Chambers need more ways to engage the community and have conversations that matter. We were also inspired to create a map that guides new business owners through the steps of starting a business and the resources that can help them with each step and connect non-profits to each other so they can share resources.

Answers to how chambers support local community and business

It doesn’t matter what your industry is or what business you are in, support is key. Support from like-minded people can help you to find success. There are many resources that we all tap into, like online groups or social media, but a largely untapped resource is on the community level. The Chamber of Commerce in your local community can be a huge untapped resource.

We are experts in local. Our organization meets frequently with the city and school for updates. We are at the table for community event planning and improvement initiatives. Our committees gather legislators to hear our areas concerns, welcome new businesses and meet with metro chambers for education and support. We are moving the needle every day for the betterment of our community.

The pandemic brought to our attention that our local businesses were at a disadvantage online against global retailers. Amazon is all centralized so why not our own community? The Norwalk Area Chamber will soon bring a centralized shopping and search experience to our community. This effort includes a community-wide Welcome Center and Centralized Advertising System. Now there can be one location where residents and visitors alike can search for retail Businesses and Services with a click of a button. Businesses get their own Electronic Business Card and have their business listed in both the Texting and Advertising Directory.

We gather to network, catch up and support each other. This year we added small monthly networking meetings to help connect our members face-to-face again. These events are in addition to our five community events, five full membership meetings and Annual Awards Banquet. Every event we connect our businesses to engagement opportunities with their community.

We give to local organizations that make our community great. Some of our charitable giving has supported new parks, firework displays, emergency funds for those in need and scholarships for graduating seniors to continue their education. Each community event is paired with a local charity or initiative.

How can a chamber help you? If you are small business owner, we can boost your network and marketing efforts, boost your legislative voice and provide credibility to your business. If you are a resident, we can connect you to local information, events, businesses, and volunteer opportunities.
